We often hear that the Olympics are "all about the money," and when looking at the medal count by country, it reminded of similarly ranked list and found that GDP and medal count line up quite well. Clearly, champions require capital. So perhaps let's not congratulate our country's athletic dominance (unless your a Fijian rugby player... then you have every right!) without recognizing that it's wealth that makes possible the kind of training that turns great athletes into superlative olympians. And we are privileged to have the wealth that lets us celebrate from our sofas the achievements of our fellow citizens.
